What is this experiment trying to show us?


This picture is of an experiment set-up in my classroom. What is it tryng to show us? Comment below.

I think that this experiment is trying to show us that plants can grow under water. Also I think it is trying to show us that plants growing under water can breathe.

When the plant blows bubbles its releasing oxygen.

I think this experiment is trying to show us that all living things produe oxygen and can grow using oxygen. This plant i pushing the oxygen to the top of the beeker and it forms buubles at the surface of the water.

Good comment...but do ALL living things produce oxygen?

I think you are on to something with the bubbles of oxygen. Why do you think it recently slowed down?

I think the plant has stopped its oxegen because it is not getting the sugar it needs.

Thanks for posting.

In photosynthesis we talked about carbon dioxide and water comng together (with the sun's energy and the help of chlorophyl) to create Glucose and Oxygen.

The sugar and oxygen are products of photosynthesis. With that in mind, do you think that lack of sugar (Glucose) would hold up the process?

i think it has stopped increasing oxygen because the carbon dioxide levels are low so it cannot Photosynthesize which makes the oxygen outtake smaller

That is an interesting theory John.

We'll have to see what happens over the next couple of days and them try and introduce some CO2 to the system by blowing bubbles into the fish tank.

What do you think?

i think this will increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the tank and increase its oxygen output but do not blow the bubbles into the tube with the pure oxgen or else you cannot make it explode

i think that that will increase the carbon dioxide in the tank which will increase the oxygen because the Photosynthesis can be completed so will increase the Oxygen production

Hi All,

I don't want to be misunderstood here. The CO2 bubblew would be away fromt he test tube collecting oxygen but also there will be no EXPLODING in my classroom! :-) If I were to demonstrate that it was pure oxygen it would be with a very small amount that was collected and would merely "pop"...not explode. :-)

I think that the plant that is underwater is surving and producing air, but i also think that it needs carbon dioxide not only oxygen.

I think that this experiment is trying to show us that plants need their space. It's not in the picture, but there's this little sprout trying to come out of the container.

I think that it showing us that everything will survive depending on what type of climate it lives in.

These are all very interesting points! Keep 'em coming.

I have been blowing into the fish tak through the straws during the day to introduce carbon dioxide into the water. I think I did notice a little bubble activity.

Do you think we jump-started the photosynthesis process again for a little bit?

i think when the plant dehales the oxygen, the bubbles float to the top of the test tube.

How about you introduce a living creature into the tank i.e. a frog or a turtle to release the Carbon Dioxide into the tank? It'll show how ecosystems keep things in balance. ~Cameron Y

Hey Cameron,

Although i would be concerned about the health of the fish, it would be interesting to introduce a small fih and see if the fish and plant can strike that balance of carbon dioxide to oxygen.

i think the experiment is also showiing us that it can survive underwater too. but what is that tube thingy that you put on top of it?

I agree with Cameron. We should put maybe something like a snail in there and see if it can survive. Even if the animal doesn't surve then you will be demonstrating the circle of life!:)
What was that chemical you put in the water? Is it harmful to fish?

my class (Summer)put i think vasiline on Boris (the plant). But the leaf looks like it is still surving why is that??? :D

Hi Steph!

We added water conditioner to the water so that the chlorine which is in tap water would dissipate. This should make the water even better suited for teeny critters. We'll have to consider adding a couple of living things soon.

Boris (the plant) is having the stomata of one leaf blocked by the petroleum jelly on its underside. Let's keep watching to see what happens!

what living things are you considering putting in?do you think the organism will die first or the plant? i think the plant will stop growing because you put the conditioner in. did you give the plant a name??

I am hoping we cna strike a balance between the organisms in the tank... but you never know! maybe a couple of snails or a goldfish.

No name for the plant...just plant.

hi mr. forde it is me yuliana well i think that the plant that we have been doing these couple of weeks is going to grow because it has enough wateer and food well that is what i think so. and also it can grow in a way that we will never imagine. it is going to be so cool. so that is what i think of this expirement. since it is blowing bubbles it is also releasing oxygen and that it is breathing so it can survive. well that is what i think so that is my comment. ok so bii mr. forde

thats an original name, "plant"! this should be very interesting when you put the fish or snail in. but won''t the tank get dirty? what will you do when you have to clean it out?

sorry for not posting in so long. Yea I think it is lacking glucose. If we put in fish or other plants to the tank would that help make the oxygen?
