Enrichment Post #1

Hi Students,

If you do the following on-line experience you will be issued extra credit for science class. There will be a new one each week.

This week what I would like you to do is play the game called WEED WIPEOUT by clicking here. Go to the PLAY THE GANE link on the bottom right and read the instructions.

I would like you to reflect on the game and the different techniques that one can use to manage invasive weeds that need to be controlled in a postinf for extra credit. It isn't easy to beat them!

I look forward to your reactions.

Mr. F :-)

HI Steph,

You have to read the directions carefully. Certain ways of eradicating the weeds are actually counter-productive. See how you do and post a response here.

It was pretty fun. I found that different weeds reacted better to certain removal techniques than others. At first I could not get rid of certain weeds, but then I Combined things together and got rid of them. This is what I had to do with the serrated tussock. it took me awhile to figure out what I had to use. I learned that biological control and the pasture management worked well together.

Great Steph,

I am glad you gave it a shot. It isn't that straight forward at first.

What did you learn from the experience?

I tried the game and it was pretty cool and sometimes challenging. First of all I learned that it is good to use a variety of techniques and using one even though it may be effective at that time will not work anymore on that type of plant. I learned that because I was using biological control too much on the rubber plant and after sometime it didn't work anymore. Also I learned that on the smaller infestations it is good to use physical labor and one or two treatments are enough but on the larger infestations I learned to use 3 or 4 different types of techniques for there is more variety and there is more stress on the plant. I found out that biological treatment is very good in taking out rubber vine and the spray helps with a lot of infestations. The game gave me a lot of information and also told of the consequences of some of the treatments such as the spray and how that is bad for the environment and controlled burnings how they can get out of hand.
Thanks for the Game!

i had alot of fun playing the game.
i play it alot to see if can stil win.
the first lvl was easy but some weeds wouldnt die from fires so i had to buy more expencive fertilizer but the fertilizer works on all plant.
i beat both lvls.
im happy i didnt use the spray.
i learned that some meathods are better than others when trying to kill all the plants even if it costs more to do it.
i hope you post more games like this on the computer because this is really fun.

the first time i played the game on advanced i got stuck but then the second time i used biological control on all of them exept pattersons curse because it kills the animals and surrated tussock because no insects want to eat it so i used plain phsical removal on those two

It wasn't that hard, I won on my first try. But it is hard remembering which extermination processes work better with which weeds.
