Chia Heads Created!
The students took their original questions about the abiotic factors that effect plants and designed their chia head experiments. Each team decided on a question that they thought was interesting and we are now under way. It may take a week or so to see any results but we'll keep checking in on them and recording the changes on our ISNs. Some of the variables being investigated are the effect of: no light, grow light, colored light, coffee, peanut butter, plant food, red bull, diet coke, pudding, bran cereal, nerds (the candy...not me and my friends), coolada, ice packs, M&Ms, heatng elements, ......and many more!
Wish us luck!
Mr. Forde :-)
ps- Thanks for all of the panty hose! They are helping to move science forward!

The chia head experiment is fun! We're doing music on ours.
Any particular kind of music?
Mr. F :-)
yeah we are doing bran cereal on ours it has already started to sprout
John Benalcazar
Hey John,
As i recall yours smells pretty bad...but is starting to spout. Why do you think that is?
Mr. Forde :-)
I forgot to put my name, sorry. Deepali, Kim and I are doing R&B music. We have this weird dead sprout on the top of the head right now. Maybe the R&B is too loud...?
I wouldn't blame your "weird sprout" on R&B music. I love R&B music! :-)
Let's see what happens in a week or so!
Mr. F :-)
me and gelmira are doing the music treatment. and the first time we didthe treatment we had to sing to it because i forgot the music. and it started to grow. so today we played the music and i cant wait to see what will happen the our chia-head. it mey not like the music and die or it may like the music and grow.i cant wait!
P.S.I love this experiment!
:p

i like the chia head expirement!!! me kristian and ryan are doing ares in blue frosting. it hasnt sprouted yet.

Even though it sounds kind of wierd i would have suggested changing everything about where the grass is located then you would be able to see why the grass hasent grown and how it could effect other things in it envioment.
Karlton Parrott
Hey Karl! If you changed everything, you wouldn't know what caused the plant to survive or die. Already, it's environment is diffent than before- normally grass grows outside and it's living inside the school. There is some room for error- some plants are closer to the heater than the window. I don't know if Janay has told you this, but the most successful plants include one with at straw that dangles over the heating vent and one that gets one period's worth of hot plate treatment during the week. I'd say that warm weather is good for grass growing. My experiment involves dark chocolate M&Ms... It's grown 3/4 of an inch in 1 day!

how long are we going to do this exeriment?
Haley Argueta
Today we started a new chia head expirement. we put it in the corner of the class room and we want to see if it will grow with incendecent light.

the chiahead experiment ;
i work with sara & catherine.
their funn to work with :]
Hi All,
Great to see the posting and i am glad that you are enjoying the experiment.
Haley...I think we'll try and keep them going until the November long weekend to get a good set of data. What do you think?
Cameron...I think you may have misinterpreted Karlton's point. He was saying that we should have focused ONLY on the placement of the plants and not other factors. Location would have been the independent variable while the rate of growth would be the dependent variable.... in that case.
Have a great weekend.
Mr. F :-)
The R&B music is doing something really weird to Raghav (our chia head). It has sprouts on his face, and you can see the roots. They're actually coming out!
i am working with Ali and Jackie on our chia head. We named him Fizz becuase we put soda on it. Then it started to smell really really bad and we had to restart:(
now we are putting our's in the dark. someone in our group is doing that and the grass turned neon yellow. did anyone else put soda on theirs? and did it grow with the soda??
Stephanie Samaranayake
Right, mr forde, I did mix up his intention. Thanks for clearing that up! Cameron
Hi Cameron!
No problem. Asynchronous (not real time) communication on the internet often leads to misunderstandings.
Your comments have been very helpful to the blog. Keep posting.
Mr. F :-)
Hey Steph,
The yellowing of the plants in the dark is known as chlorosis and is due to the break down of chlorophyl!
Mr. F :-)
they are really pretty and nice i like their expirement and that is so kool.
cool. thanx for the facts. is chlorophyl the same stuff as people put in there pools? (clorine?)
Steph S
Hi Steph,
The chlorine which is used in pools is different from chlorophyl. They are similar though, in that the chlorine molecule is essential to both.
Mr. Forde:-)
The chia head expirimentis so much fun! Haley and i are giving our plant music as a treatment, so everyday haley brings in her iPod and we play music for Jaylin (the chea head).Lastweek we had a blade of grass that was about 8cm long but then it came out by accident and i don't remember how long all the other ones are.
~Gelmira~
Me, Taylor, and Caitlin are talking to are plant. It might seem weird, but Bob(that's his name) is already at 7 1/2CM!!!
