Enrichment post #12- Ecological footprint!

Hi All,

Earthday is Tuesday so I wanted to place this link to the footprint network web site here for you to explore.

I want all of my students to take the ecological footprint survey which is at this link.. Print out the final page where it tells you how many earths would be necessary if everyone acted they way you do. I am embarressed to say that my ecological footprint is way too large (over 5) due to my driving habits and the poor gas mileage of our family vehicles.

I can't wait to hear all of your responses to this activity. Do it with a family member for the most accurate set of results. They may learn something too!

All the best!

Mr. F :-)

  1. Hi Mr, Forde,
I just took that survey and I got 14 acres!!! My mom thinks it's because of the size of my family and house.I will print it and give it to you tomorrow.
    Thanks,

  3. WOW...we need a few more earths over this side of town also. Our daughter is in Ms. Ross's class. It just so happens that we had a site survey for Solar Electric panels this morning. We believe that too few people in the US are aware of or even concerned for our environment enough to actual take an action to help it. We are NOT one of those!

  11. Hi Mr. ford,
I took the survey. I only used 3.6 Earths! I think that sounds like a good amount. I had a high amount for
services. I think I can conserve more by using less electricity.
I'm from Monroe CT, and I go to Chalk Hill Middle School. I'm in Ms. Ross' computer class.

  12. Mr. Forde,
I thought that it was a great idea
to give us this activity for Earth Day because it let people know how much we were polluting the earth. I also think that letting us know how many earth's we would need was smart because it makes people realize how much we're damaging the earth. Thank you.

I found that my footprint was smaller when I did it with my mom. I think it was because some things I really wasn't sure about and when my mom clarified them they turned out a little smaller than I had in mind.

  36. Hi Mr Forde,
when I took the survey i found out that if everyone lived how I did, we would need 3.4 earths for the resources to satisfy everyone's needs. I did this survey with my Mom, and she found out if eveeryone lived like my mom, we would need 4.3 earths for the energy to satisfy everyone's needs. I guess it was because of how much electricity everyone was using, and the amount of hours that everyone flew per year. This survey was a great idea and it taught people how much much non-renewable they were using, and what they can do about it.

  60. Dear Mr. Forde,

My family took the quiz and got 6.7. One of the reasons I think we got that score is because my dad flies over 300,000 miles on the plane each year for work. We also use a lot of electricity. We are trying to use less electricity. This quiz tells me that we are really hurting the earth, and if it weren't for the people who dedicate their lives and work to saving the earth, the earth would be nothing.
